The year 2016 has arrived and that makes it my 20th year in the making. This is the longest period of time that I have ever committed myself to any one craft project and I have not lost my enthusiasm for creating.
I used to be just “Pat” but now I am known as “The Denim Lady” or “The Slipper Lady” and this all came about from creating a couple of pairs of slippers 20 years ago. By word of mouth is the best advertising and this is how my career has expanded. The first two pairs of slippers that I made were very crude but with over a year of work put into reconstructing the pattern, experimenting with fabrics and getting the proper sizes, I am now considered a professional slipper maker.
I was a working mother who worked full time at the Credit Union here in Marcelin and then sewed in the evenings and week-ends. Once I attended a few small town craft shows and people became familiar with my slippers, I then had to start reorganizing my life. Finally after 24 years at the Credit Union, I decided that it was time to take an early retirement and go into my Denim Creations Made by Pat. Becoming a full time crafter and going to the craft shows has made my life a lot fuller. I have met so many interesting people who have become faithful customers plus the other crafters have become my family away from home.
My products are all made from recycled denim jeans. They are bought at thrift stores by the boxes, brought home, cut up, sorted into the best pieces and then stacked until it is time to be reborn again into a pair of slippers or whatever their purpose will be. Polar/igloo polyester fleece (purchased new) is my other main fabric used. It is such a soft, cozy and very practical material. If you looked at the Welcome Page and saw the logo for Denim Creations Made by Pat, the heart symbolizes all the love, care and attention that go into each of my articles.
I have so many people to thank in helping me over the years but most of the credit will go to my husband and 3 sons. They have always inspired me to do more and go bigger. They truly believe in my products and can sell them just as well as I can. The other person to thank is Louise. This is the lady that comes in and helps me with the production end. She can sew just as good of seam as I can. My final thank you goes to YOU, the customers, who have bought my products, enjoyed them to the fullest and come back for more. It is you who have helped me the most in building my business. Like I said…by word of mouth is the best advertising so I truly hope that you will spread your experiences with my products to your friends.
In case you are wondering where Marcelin is…..look on a Saskatchewan/Canada road map and you will see that Marcelin is 1 driving hour north of Saskatoon, 1 hour west of Prince Albert and just over 1 hour east of North Battleford. It is just a small village of about 169 people and has been my home for over 30 years now. I always tease people and tell them not to blink when they drive by or else they will miss it, but truly....I am proud to call it my home and I hope to someday put the Village of Marcelin on the map as the home of “The Denim Slipper Lady”.
My motto: GOD GAVE ME MY CREATIVE TALENT …BUT NOT THE MONEY TO BUY THE SUPPLIES. HENCE, I AM HERE AS A CRAFTER.
Thank you for taking the time to read this page. I appreciate it.
